"The partnership between Exxon Mobil and Philadelphia's Aker Shipyard to build two new Liberty Class vessels is good news for our local economy. The 1,000 jobs created by the two-year venture will be a boost to local residents looking for work and the small businesses who depend on that employment. The Philadelphia Navy Yard has an important history of providing good jobs for local residents and this project continues that tradition. Philadelphia was once a hub of American manufacturing and is on pace to regain that status.
The double hull vessels will be used to transport Alaska North Slope crude oil to U.S. West Coast destinations and will be built to include the latest navigation and communications equipment and exceed current environmental and energy efficiency standards."
