Fattah Announces 2.7 Million in Transportation Funding for Pedestrian and Bicycle Paths
WASHINGTON, April 11, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Congressman Chaka Fattah (PA-02), a Senior Member of the House Appropriations Committee, announces that five local transportation projects will receive $2.7 million from the Federal Highway Administration to improve safety conditions for pedestrians and bicyclist.
In announcing the grant from the Transportation Alternatives Program, Congressman Fattah said, "Funding for these projects will help Philadelphia communities become safer for those walking or riding their bicycles and allow residents and tourist to enjoy their neighborhoods and local attractions in a more secure environment."
The five projects that will receive funding from the grant include:
Make Way for Children, Expanding Pedestrian Infrastructure to Philadelphia Schools ($950,000) –Improvements to sidewalks and intersections will be made near two elementary schools where there is a high incidence of motor vehicle crashes involving children.
Manayunk Bridge Trail Site Amenities ($600,000) – Improved lighting will be installed allowing for better safety conditions and expanded hours along the trail.
City of Philadelphia Safe Routes to School ($450,000) – Funds for this project will be directed to students promoting the idea of more exercise by walking and or biking to school. Lessons will be provided on the basics of traffic safety especially near high accident area schools.
Chelten-Greene Plaza Reconstruction ($370,000) – A reconstruction of the plaza will alter the north side corner of the Chelten Avenue and Greene Street intersection. When completed, the plaza, a central transfer point for busses will be a safer place for pedestrians connecting to Vernon Park and attractions along Chelten Avenue.
Safe Spaces for Cyclists: Building a Protected Bicycle Network ($300,000) – Funding for this project will be directed at cyclists to provide additional protected bike lanes, flexible delineator posts, signage and improved pavement markings in and round the city.
