Fattah Announces $2.3 Million in Federal Funding to Philadelphia Organizations
The funding awards will go to help crime victims, improve safety in schools, and support families with an incarcerated parent
WASHINGTON, Oct. 1, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Congressman Chaka Fattah (PA-02), a senior member of the House Appropriations Committee, announced today that the Department of Justice (DOJ) has awarded $2.3 million to three programs within the Philadelphia community that support crime victims and work to improve safety.
Connections Training Services will receive $436,197 in Second Chance Act funds to promote and expand services to children with incarcerated parents. Additionally, Drexel University will receive $994,651 to increase services and support available to male survivors of violence and their families through the Healing Hurt People (HHP) Program. The University of Pennsylvania will receive a separate grant for $883,519 from the National Institute of Justice to fund research that will improve the safety of schools and students.
"This funding benefits the entire community, as we work to build a stronger, more inclusive city," Congressman Fattah said. "Second Chance Act funds have proven pivotal to strengthening Philadelphia families with an incarcerated parent, and improving re-entry for parents who are released. These collective grant awards are an important step forward in our collaborative effort to expand the resources, support, and research available to decrease crime and enhance safety."
Through his leadership role on the Appropriations Subcommittee for Commerce, Justice, and Science (CJS), Congressman Fattah has successfully increased funding for the Second Chance Act, and has been a powerful advocate for these and other DOJ programs.
