Fattah: Jobs Numbers Doubly Good Sign

WASHINGTON, June 7, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Congressman Chaka Fattah (D-PA), a Senior Member on the House Appropriations Committee releases the following statement following this morning's May jobs report:

"Today's jobs report shows signs of encouragement for both employers and potential employees. Employers, apparently feeling more optimistic about the economy, added a better than expected 175,000 jobs. Additionally, more Americans began job searching again.  While those looking for work produced a slight uptick in the unemployment rate, from 7.5 in April to 7.6 in May, economists say it's a good sign that more people are job hunting.

"America has now experienced 39 consecutive months of job growth for a total of 6.9 million jobs, and economists say they're encouraged that the number of layoffs is on the decline. This year alone, 972,000 private sectors jobs have been added. And after 7 years of steadily falling prices and record number foreclosures, there are clear signs the housing market is recovering.

"The recovery is steady, but there is still much to do. I call on my colleagues in the House to support the growing economy, and let's work together to end the sequester and bring a fair and balanced approach to reduce the deficit and get more Americans back on the job."
