Father's Day at The Wall: Roses to be Laid in Honor of Fallen Dads
General James T. Conway, Former Commandant of the United States Marine Corps, to be keynote speaker
WASHINGTON, June 11, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Father's Day is a time to honor all of our fathers, and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund (VVMF) will continue the annual tradition of paying special tribute to those fathers who died as a result of the Vietnam War. The Father's Day Rose Remembrance ceremony features beautiful symbolism, emotional tributes and elegant reverence in recognition of fathers, sons, brothers and friends who perished in Vietnam or later of Vietnam-related causes.
This year's ceremony will be on June 15 at 10 a.m. at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial (The Wall). Jan Scruggs, VVMF's founder and president, will give remarks, along with Captain Denis Faherty, USN (Ret.) and former deputy director of the National Strategic War Gaming Center, National Defense University. General James T. Conway, 34th Commandant of the United States Marine Corps, will be the keynote speaker.
Roses of red, symbolizing those killed in action; yellow, for those missing in action; and white with red tips, for those honored by VVMF's In Memory Program, are attached to written remembrances. The remembrances are then read aloud and the roses are placed at the base of the Memorial. Family, friends and other visitors are invited to take part as the emotional ceremony concludes with a bed of roses surrounding the memorial, a breathtaking sight that demonstrates both the gratitude and the sacrifices of families impacted by foreign conflict.
About VVMF and the Education Center at The Wall
Established in 1979, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund is dedicated to preserving the legacy of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., promoting healing and educating about the impact of the Vietnam War.
The Education Center at The Wall will be a place on our National Mall where our military heroes' stories and sacrifice will never be forgotten. With plans to begin construction in 2016, the Center is a technologically-innovative learning facility to be built on the grounds of the Vietnam Veterans and Lincoln Memorials. Visitors will better understand the profound impact that the Vietnam War and other wars had on their friends and family members, their hometowns and the nation. The Center will feature the faces and stories of the more than 58,000 men and women on The Wall, honoring those who fell in Vietnam, those who fought and returned, as well as the friends and families of all who served. The Center will also celebrate the legacy of service that links the heroes of America's past to those still serving today.
