OAKTON, Va., July 12, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Vemo Education, a Virginia-based education technology company that partners with colleges, universities, and other education providers to develop income-based financing solutions, today announced the appointment of Shanaz Chowdhery as General Manager, Alternative Education. Chowdhery, named one of Washington, DC's hottest young entrepreneurs in 2017, joins Vemo Education from the skills training provider General Assembly, where she served as the company's DC Regional Director.
"It's our mission to increase access to educational opportunities by helping schools align cost with outcomes," said Tonio DeSorrento, Founder and CEO of Vemo Education. "Shanaz's passionate commitment to fostering skills-based training as a pathway to economic mobility, combined with her experience at the country's leading accelerated tech training provider, will make her an invaluable addition to our team as we continue to grow."
Vemo Education has pioneered the design and implementation of income share agreements, a new model of student finance adopted by colleges, universities, and skills based training providers, including Purdue University, Lackawanna College, Kenzie Academy, New York Code + Design Academy, and others that offer part or all of tuition in exchange for a fixed percentage of income for a defined period of time after graduation. As General Manager, Alternative Education, Chowdhery will lead Vemo Education's outreach to skills-based training providers.
"Financial barriers and the specter of student loan debt create too many obstacles for individuals seeking pathways to social and economic mobility," said Chowdhery. "I'm proud to join Vemo Education to help level the playing field so that all learners can achieve their potential."
Chowdhery began her career as a Teach for America Corps Member in the Washington, DC region before joining General Assembly in 2014. As Regional Director, Chowdhery oversaw General Assembly's expansion in the Mid-Atlantic market. Last year, she was named one of DC Inno's 50 on Fire, a designation recognizing the "hottest" organizations and individuals in the region each year. Chowdhery is a graduate of Yale University, where her research focused on the role of social capital and financial resources in shaping students' internship prospects.
