Faronics Marks Earth Day by Exceeding BC Hydro Savings Goals
SAN RAMON, Calif., April 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Faronics, a global leader in computer power management and cost reducing IT solutions, announced today that Faronics Power Save customer, BC Hydro Power Authority, has outperformed preliminary predictions by saving an extra 200,000 kilowatt hours (kWh) of energy a year. In a Total Economic Impact (TEI) study conducted in 2009 with industry expert Forrester Consulting and commissioned by Faronics, BC Hydro initially estimated they would save 1 Gigawatt hour (GWh) of electricity from reducing their computer energy waste via Faronics Power Save. Recent research has now revealed the Canadian based company has saved 1.2 GWh.
The TEI study was based on the deployment of Power Save on over 8000 computers at BC Hydro, who generates up to 54,000 GWh of electricity and serves 1.8 million customers in British Columbia. BC Hydro was able to realize a risk–adjusted ROI of 35%, with a payback period of 20 months. Over the next three years they will save an estimated three million kilowatt hours (kWh), valued at over $240,000.
TEI not only measures fully burdened costs and cost reduction (areas that are typically accounted for within IT) but also weighs the enabling value of a technology in increasing the effectiveness of overall business processes.
BC Hydro had already adopted significant improvements in its PC power consumption prior to using Power Save. The ROI represents significant incremental gains on a relatively efficient base level of electricity consumption. Organizations at an earlier stage of green IT maturity could see a significantly higher ROI and faster payback.
Power Save works by analyzing CPU, application activity, disk, keyboard, network, and mouse status before taking power management actions, and delivers enterprise-wide desktop computer energy management. The fast implementation and quick ROI payback enable companies to leverage Power Save to immediately deliver true business value. Since its release in 2007, Power Save has earned numerous accolades for its ease-of-use, flexibility, and quick time-to-value.
"We were thrilled to learn Power Save has outperformed BC Hydro's initial expectations," said Farid Ali, Faronics CEO. "Employing a dedicated PC power management strategy is one of the most immediate and cost-effective ways for any organization to reduce their energy consumption and power bill, and is a great way to celebrate Earth Day."
