Farmland acquired in 19th Century by Sen. David Davis set for auction by family

BLOOMINGTON, Ill., Dec. 9, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- During the 19th Century, Bloomington's David Davis served as presidential campaign manager for Abraham Lincoln, U.S. Supreme Court Justice, executor of Lincoln's estate and as a U.S. Senator. Along the way, he also became one of the biggest landowners in Illinois. Now, his descendants are selling 1,448 acres of his land in an auction set for Jan. 20, with Murray Wise Associates conducting the event.

The land -- virtually all tillable -- includes three farms in McLean and DeWitt Counties.

"Senator Davis not only served his country well, but he also acquired some of the best farmland in the state," said Joe Bubon, executive vice president of Murray Wise Associates. "These three farms have stayed in the family all of these years, but they believe it is time to let this land go."

The land -- all located within 20 miles of Bloomington Normal, will sell in tracts ranging in size from 79 to 161 acres. The DeWitt County land includes 400 acres southwest of Le Roy. Another 728 acres are just south of Gridley, in McLean County. The remaining 320 acres are southwest of Chenoa Township, McLean County.

"These farms have some of the highest quality soils, in the best locations, in the state, with a history of producing more than 200 bushels of corn per acre. This is exactly the kind of land buyers favor in this market, equally well suited to either producers or investors," said Bubon.

Murray Wise Associates personnel will be available from 10 to noon Tuesday, Dec. 29, at the Parke Regency Conference Center, in Bloomington Normal, to answer detailed questions about the properties. The auction will begin at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 20, at the conference center. Online bidding will be available upon request.
