Farm Journal Foundation Congratulates Congress On Enhancing Global Food Security
WASHINGTON, July 7, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- On behalf of the Farm Journal Foundation, our Farmers Feeding the World leaders across the United States and more than twenty thousand HungerU student advocates, we would like to thank Congress for passing the Global Food Security Act of 2016.
This bi-partisan bill affirms U.S. leadership in enhancing global food security, primarily by helping farmers in developing countries produce more of their own food to improve their livelihoods.
Today, there are an estimated 795 million food insecure people on this planet, and we know that at least half of those people are actually smallholder farmers and their family members. Sadly, even though their main occupation is farming, these men and women lack sufficient resources and/or knowledge to produce enough food to feed their family on a year-round basis.
We thank Senators Johnny Isakson (R-GA) and Robert P. Casey Jr. (D-PA) for introducing this important piece of legislation in the Senate, as well as Representatives Chris Smith (R-NJ) and Betty McCollum (D-MN) for introducing the legislation in the House. We thank the leadership of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and the House and Senate Agriculture Committees for their input and support. We also thank Senate and House Leadership, especially Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV), Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI), and Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), for shepherding the bill through to final passage.
Our farmers invest their time in the Farmers Feeding the World Farm Team Program because of their passion for agriculture and for feeding hungry people, both at home and abroad. We greatly appreciate their contribution, taking the time to visit their Members of Congress to talk about this important issue over the last two years.
