FamilySearch Selects Electric Cloud's ElectricCommander to Automate Ancestor Connections
World's largest genealogy organization chooses ElectricCommander to reduce software delivery time from 30 days to less than an hour
SUNNYVALE, Calif., July 27, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Electric Cloud®, the development cloud company, today announced that FamilySearch International has selected ElectricCommander® to create a continuous delivery pipeline for its software development across physical, virtual, private cloud and public cloud resources. The automation and management ElectricCommander provides will reduce FamilySearch's build, test, deploy cycle from its current 30 days down to 30-45 minutes.
FamilySearch is the world's largest genealogy organization. Millions of people worldwide rely on FamilySearch to preserve and provide free access to genealogical records, and FamilySearch's software development team needed a solution that could enable an efficient, continuous software development pipeline spanning a variety of resources.
"Our software engineers are responsible for putting hundreds of millions of digitized or indexed historic records at the fingertips of millions of users each year," said Ransom Love, senior vice president of strategic relations for FamilySearch. "We're excited to implement ElectricCommander into our digital pipeline efforts. It will help us provide better, faster results for the millions of FamilySearch patrons worldwide."
FamilySearch chose ElectricCommander because it drastically cuts down the time FamilySearch will spend building, testing and deploying code, as well as spinning up virtual machines to support the development cycle. That means FamilySearch will be able to expedite the time required to make product updates and publish more historic records online for its patrons.
"We can now define a process once, and ElectricCommander will reuse it across different teams and projects," added Love. "None of the other solutions we considered could match the ease of use, simplicity and cost-effectiveness of ElectricCommander."
Implementing ElectricCommander will enable code changes made by FamilySearch engineers to be immediately deployed to production, taking into account all the various interdependencies of a particular piece of code. ElectricCommander will also initiate the creation and tearing down of virtual machines for testing, and automate the complete build, test and deployment process.
"With so many patrons depending on FamilySearch for accurate, comprehensive genealogical data, it's imperative that their software development lifecycle run smoothly and efficiently. ElectricCommander will do just that across physical, virtual and cloud resources," said Electric Cloud CEO Mike Maciag.
FamilySearch's team of 200 developers is spread across multiple geographic locations. ElectricCommander works with the tools and processes the developers already have in place, making the transition simple and painless. Once fully implemented, ElectricCommander will automate and manage the software development lifecycle supporting more than 40 individual products at FamilySearch.
ElectricCommander is an enterprise-class solution enabling a development cloud by automating all the repetitive tasks that occur in the application lifecycle, such as building, testing, packaging and deployment. Completely process- and tool-agnostic, ElectricCommander scales to concurrently support all of the software development projects within an organization, regardless of physical location or automation need. It also provides comprehensive workflow orchestration and management and reporting capabilities.
