Family Research Council Calls on House Members to Sign Discharge Petition to Simply Allow a Vote on Born Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act

WASHINGTON, March 26, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- Family Research Council is urging Members of the U.S. House of Representatives to sign onto a discharge petition set to be active on April 2.

House Minority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) and Rep. Ann Wagner (R-Mo.) introduced the discharge petition on February 6, and other members can sign on when it becomes active on April 2. When a majority of members sign onto the discharge petition, it will force a vote on the Born Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act (H.R. 962).

House Democrats have blocked requests to pass the bill by unanimous consent 20 times, and on February 4, Senator Patty Murray (D-Wash.) blocked the companion Senate bill (S. 311) after Senator Ben Sasse (R-Neb.) sought to pass it by unanimous consent.

Family Research Council President Tony Perkins released the following statement:

"Providing health care to babies born alive is an issue that should receive unanimous support, regardless of your position on abortion. By continuing to block this commonsense legislation, Democratic leadership in the House is essentially giving the green light to infanticide. There is no practice more barbaric than killing babies that could survive if given care.

"We are at a moment of decision for our country. Whether or not we will allow infanticide—the murder of a baby who survives the first attempt on their life—has become a defining issue for us as a nation.

"The first article of clothing given to a newborn baby is a thermal hat. Family Research Council is calling on Congress to End Birth Day Abortion by sending baby hats to Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Like most Americans, we believe that babies should be welcomed into this world with warmth and love, not abandoned on a cold table to die.
