Faith Leaders Denounce Brinkmanship As Budget, Debt Ceiling Deadlines Loom
WASHINGTON, Sept. 26, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Nationally recognized faith leaders will hold a press conference on Monday, Sept. 30 at 10 a.m. EDT, the eve of a possible shutdown of the U.S. government. Unless our nation's leaders reach agreement on appropriations for the coming months, the U.S. government will close on Oct. 1, the start of the 2014 fiscal year. If no agreement is reached by Oct. 17 on increasing the debt limit, the country's creditworthiness will be compromised.
A group of very conservative legislators continue to insist on disproportionate cuts to programs that help struggling Americans, and their unwillingness to compromise is disrupting economic recovery —this is bad for all Americans and especially for hungry and poor families.
WHO:
Sister Simone Campbell SSS, executive director, NETWORK, A National Catholics Social Justice Lobby
Rev. David Beckmann, president, Bread for the World (press conference moderator)
Rev. John L. McCullough, president and CEO, Church World Service
Rabbi David Saperstein, director, Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism
Dr. Sayyid Syeed, national director, Office for Interfaith and Community Alliances, Islamic Society of North America
Rev. Jim Wallis, CEO, Sojourners
WHEN: Monday, Sept. 30 at 10 a.m. EDT
WHERE and HOW: Call 1-800-874-4559, verbal passcode to gain access: FAITHLEADERS
WHY: Faith leaders denounce the brinkmanship of members of Congress who put partisan politics ahead of the people they were elected to serve. Members of Congress and their staffers are currently scrambling to find ways to keep the government running when its fiscal year 2013 funds run out on Sept. 30. They will either continue funding the government at 2013 levels or the government will shut down. Even if Congress acts to avert a shut down of the government, the funding battle will continue with the Oct. 17 deadline for raising the U.S. debt limit.
Bread for the World (www.bread.org) is a collective Christian voice urging our nation's decision makers to end hunger at home and abroad.
