Fairway Market Joins Forces With Fairway Mortgage Corp. To Give Away House To A Disabled Iraq/Afghanistan War Veteran On Long Island
Initiative Announced at Grand Opening of New Fairway Market in Lake Grove on July 23
LAKE GROVE, N.Y., July 23, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Fairway Market and Fairway Independent Mortgage Corp., both of which have a deep commitment to supporting members of the Armed Services and military veterans, announced today that they have joined forces to give away a new home to a returning wounded or disabled Iraq and Afghanistan war veteran on Long Island.
The announcement was made at the Grand Opening of Fairway Market's newest location in Lake Grove in Suffolk County by Charles Santoro, Fairway Market's Executive Chairman. The new store, at DSW Plaza, 3200 Middle Country Road, is the first Fairway Market location in Suffolk County on Long Island and the company's 15th food store in the New York, New Jersey, Connecticut tri-state region.
"The men and women who served in Iraq and Afghanistan sacrificed so much in the name of freedom. In far too many cases, they have come back missing limbs and organs and suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Traumatic Brain Injury. And far too often, these wounded veterans are marginalized or forgotten," said Mr. Santoro. "We have an obligation – as a country and as Americans – to ensure that their sacrifices are not forgotten, that they have access to the finest care for their injuries and that we do what we can to help them reintegrate into their families and their communities in the most seamless manner. That is why we at Fairway Market are honored to participate with our friends at Fairway Mortgage in this initiative to provide a new, mortgage free home to one of these valiant American heroes."
Fairway Market has long supported military and veterans causes through a number of programs, including designated shopping nights in which a percentage of all store proceeds from that night are donated to a specific non-profit organization. The company is also a supporter of The American Bombshells, a 501c3 not-for-profit that provides patriotic entertainment to military and veterans organizations, helps with transitioning veterans into the civilian workforce by providing them with business suits, compiles and sends care packages to troops overseas and other programs.
For the home give-away program, Fairway Market will hold a designated shopping night on Wednesday, July 30. That evening, 25% of all proceeds from all sales will go directly to the Fairway Foundation, the Fairway Independent Mortgage Corp.'s 501c3 non-profit which works to acquire distressed properties and renovates them to accommodate wounded veterans from the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. In the past 18 months, 20 veterans have received mortgage-free homes.
Fairway Mortgage is also holding several other programs to raise funds for the home give-away. On Saturday, July 26, a comedy show headlined by acclaimed stand-up comedian Keith Anthony will be held at VFW Post 1469, 210 W. Pulaski Road in Huntingdon Station, NY. Several weeks later, the company will hold a series of open auditions for veterans who can sing in a benefit concert. The auditions will be held August 12, 13, and 17 at SoLuna Studios, 659 Old Willets Path in Hauppauge, NY 11788, and the concert, featuring musical performances by Peter Mazzeo and the Hit Squad and "The Next Big Thing" winner Katie Zimmer, will be on Sunday, Sept. 28 at the John W. Engeman Theater at Northport. In addition, Rosemarie Kluepfel, a motivational speaker who works for the company, has written a song called "The Reason I Breathe," with 100% of proceeds from the CD, as well as from the other events, going to the home give-away.
