Fairfield County Concours d'Elegance Showcases Cunningham C-3s at September Show
WESTPORT, Conn., Sept. 8, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Three of the 20 Cunningham C-3 Coupes can be seen at the eighth annual Fairfield County Concours d'Elegance on Sunday, September 18, 2011, Westport, Conn. Built in the early 1950s by celebrated race car builder Briggs S. Cunningham, these cars were his ticket to enter the 24 Hours of Le Mans race. Saturday, September 17 hosts a full day of programs, too.
Le Mans' rules prevent privateer builders from competing so to establish his legitimacy and secure entry, Mr. C built 20 Coupes and five Cabriolets in 1952-53: the C-3 Series. This year the Fairfield County Concours will feature three Coupes, all similar but no two alike: an original 1953 Coupe continuously owned by the Cunningham family; a 1952 Coupe rescued in 2004 from South America, the only C-3 factory-fitted for racing; and a "barn find" 1952 Coupe that sat idle for twenty years in upstate Connecticut.
Common to these three Coupes is the Chrysler Hemi FirePower V8 motor and the coachwork, designed by Giovanni Michelotti and hand-built by Carrozzeria Vignale, Turin, Italy. Different are their gearboxes, induction systems, chassis, and other details.
