WASHINGTON, May 6, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Job growth in the overall economy last month gave little comfort to America's construction workers, according to the latest data from the U.S. Department of Labor. The industry added only 5,000 jobs in March, leaving more than 1.5 million out of work. The unemployment rate was 17.8 percent – well over any other sector of the economy.

Terry O'Sullivan, General President of LIUNA, made the following statement:
The people who build this country are struggling every day to feed families, pay mortgages, or save for the future. At the same time, the basics of America are crumbling, with decaying and outdated roads and bridges and other critical infrastructure.
In the face of this national disgrace, Republican leaders elected by Americans hoping for jobs have talked about lowering taxes yet again on corporations and the wealthy and destroying Medicare. But they haven't put out a proposal on creating jobs. Simply put, they do not want to invest in America and its workers.
The lack of courage and ideas is shameful. America can tackle big problems – we can rebuild our country, maintain our status as an economic leader, and create millions of jobs. But we won't be able to do it until our leaders are interested in leading.
The half-million members of LIUNA – the Laborers' International Union of North America – are on the forefront of the construction industry, a powerhouse of workers who are proud to build America.
