ST. LOUIS, Oct. 13, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- EyePromise, the leading brand of NSF Certified nutritional products for eye health, enters the third year of a strategic partnership designed to expose Major League Baseball's top prospects to safe and healthy ways of improving on-field performance. The ocular nutrition pioneers, who bring over twenty years of research-based knowledge to the partnership, will work directly with the players and staff during the 2015 season.

"This partnership has shed light on a novel topic (nutrition for eye health) and has ultimately contributed to EyePromise's expansion in college and professional sports," said Dr. Dennis Gierhart, founder and scientist behind EyePromise. "We feel that through product innovation, EyePromise offers a unique and healthy means of improving on-field performance, and will play a big role in the future of sports nutrition," added Dr. Gierhart.
EyePromise's innovative approach to improved on-field performance gives athletes a competitive edge by applying over two decades of ocular nutrition-based research. The 'EyePromise vizual EDGE' performance product line helps athletes see better and react faster by delivering the nutrients our eyes need in a safe and convenient manner.
And while the 'EyePromise vizual EDGE' line was originally developed for the forward-thinking athlete, it is quickly becoming a standard in the modern athlete's regimen. According to Dr. Gierhart, this is in part because of the success Major League Baseball has had in converting fall leaguers to big leaguers. "Players are learning about nutrition for better vision during their time in the fall league and introducing it to their teammates once they get called up to the big leagues. This is a big reason why you can now find EyePromise in most baseball clubhouses," said Dr. Gierhart.
With the majority of players making the jump to the big leagues, the Arizona Fall League gives fans a glimpse of what their favorite team's roster will look like in the future.
"The Arizona Fall League gives top prospects from around Major League Baseball an opportunity to fine-tune their skills in a safe and controlled environment," said Steve Cobb, the league's director. "The fine-tuning goes beyond the work they put in on the diamond. At this level, players are learning how to successfully prepare for a potential jump to the big leagues. We try to give all players the tools they need to be successful in all aspects of their preparation. From how they conduct themselves off the field to how they prepare when they are not on the field. Nutrition is a big part of that," said Cobb.
According to Dave Ellis, a sports dietitian with over thirty years of experience, sports nutrition has evolved drastically over the past decade.
"Through science, we know a lot more about the complex nutritional needs of high performance athletes. It should come as no surprise that our eyes are like any other organ in our body. They need specific nutrients to function optimally. If an athlete is not accommodating these needs, they are not maximizing their full athletic potential," said Ellis. "In a game like baseball, where players have to see, process, and react to information at a high speed, there are significant implications," added Ellis.
While athletes have a vast assortment of ocular nutrition products to choose from, sports dietitians like Ellis recommend products that have been independently tested for safety and integrity by third party safety organizations, such as the National Sanitation Foundation (NSF).
"Athletes have to be conscious of what they put into their bodies," said Ellis. "The best way to do that is to choose a product that has been independently tested and that bares the NSF Certified for Sport logo," he said.
NSF International's 'Certified for Sport' program tests products for banned substances, contaminants, and ingredient label claims, and is recognized by Major League Baseball. "The fact that EyePromise has NSF Certified for Sport products is a big reason why the Arizona Fall League identified EyePromise as a partner in the first place," said Cobb.
The Arizona Fall League will get underway today and conclude on November 21st with the Championship game. EyePromise will present the third annual 'EyePromise vizual EDGE PRO' award to the league's batting champion. The award will raise funds for Optometry Giving Sight, a global fundraising initiative that targets the prevention of blindness and impaired vision due to uncorrected refractive error. Past winners include C.J. Cron and Jesse Winker.
