ExxonMobil Alaska Kicks Off IditaREAD 2019 at Nunaka Valley Elementary in Anchorage
ANCHORAGE, Alaska, Feb. 27, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- You can learn a lot from a bunch of dogs! That's the premise for ExxonMobil Alaska's sponsorship of IditaREAD. Teachers know that when kids are excited about a subject, learning comes easily. That's the great opportunity provided by the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race. Adventure, competition, and the universal bond between children and dogs combine to create the perfect chemistry to make reading and learning fun.
"It's a great way to bring the Iditarod into the classroom and get our children excited about reading," expressed Darlene Gates, president of ExxonMobil Alaska. "Students read their way through the Iditarod Trail by earning one mile for each page or minute they read."
As a company with deep roots in Alaska, ExxonMobil Alaska views civic involvement as a responsibility and an essential component of building strong and healthy communities. ExxonMobil Alaska supports educational programs through financial support, partnership and outreach in communities through its employees. "We are particularly proud of our support for the Iditarod Education Program which helps teachers use hands-on activities to spark imagination and get students enthusiastic about applying the fundamentals of reading, math and science," noted Gates.
ExxonMobil Alaska currently provides support to the Alaska Native Science and Engineering Program (ANSEP), the Alaska Native Heritage Center, Anchorage School District, the Harold Kaveolook School in Kaktovik, Junior Achievement, the Literacy Council of Alaska, and through initiatives such as Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day.
