"EXPIRED - A Death-Positive Game for Mortals" Now on Kickstarter
Father and daughter team develop discussion game about toughest topic of all: death and dying
CANMER, Ky., June 1, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- A Kickstarter campaign <LINK> is now underway to publish "EXPIRED – A Death-Positive Game for Mortals," a card-based discussion game that allows friends and family to talk openly about death and dying. But instead of being morbid and depressing, "EXPIRED" - developed by father-daughter creative team Jim and Jess Erskine - reinvents the conversation with curiosity, compassion, and a touch of humor. A video message introducing the game is available here.

"We live in a culture where being 'honest' about death and dying is taboo," says Jim Erskine. "Most of us go to great lengths to avoid talking or even thinking about the subject – especially in a group. But being able to discuss death openly as part of a relaxed game can be quite liberating and life affirming. Ultimately, 'EXPIRED' is really a game about getting in touch with your own mortality and learning to appreciate life all the more – living with less fear and more joy."
"EXPIRED" consists of a deck of 64 question cards, with custom-made dice and a velvet carrying pouch. The game is suitable for ages teen through adult, and can be played with 4 to 8 players. A typical game will last from 30 minutes to an hour. "EXPIRED" can be played either as a straight discussion game or as a discussion and card game where players also try to collect matched sets to win, while avoiding the Grim Reaper. The game's discussion questions range from lighthearted ("If you were given an envelope with the date and time of your death inside, would you open it?") to the profound ("How do you feel when someone you know dies and you weren't able to see them one last time?").
No matter how one chooses to play, the object of "EXPIRED" is always the same – to create a relaxed, non-judgmental and non-threatening atmosphere where players can talk freely about death and dying, and learn more about their own fears and beliefs along the way.
The goal of the Kickstarter campaign is to raise the necessary funds to bring "EXPIRED" to the public. Campaign backers will also have some input into the final game questions and design elements, and the Erskines have some compelling perks lined up for everyone who contributes.
