"The ICD-10 mandate is now less than one year away on October 1, 2014. Like the mortgage crisis and resulting recession starting in 2008, many miss the fact that documentation quality has an important potential financial impact, whether we look at mortgage backed securities or insurance claims for health care procedures. Companies need to mitigate this risk with ICD-10 assessments, implementation consulting, testing, clinical data analysis, and risk management practices," said Michael Arrigo, Managing Partner of No World Borders. Best practices ICD-10 preparation includes: performing ICD-10 impact training, an ICD-10 Organizational Readiness Assessment, ICD-10 Financial Risk Assessment, ICD-9 Claims Analytics, Process Assessments, ICD-10 implementation planning, ICD-10 Clinical Documentation Improvement and Quality Assessment, ICD-10 Business Roadmap, ICD-10 Gap Analysis, ICD-10 Vendor Assessment.
About ICD-10
ICD-10 establishes new standards of specificity for description of patient condition and care, and introduces a new reimbursement paradigm to the $3 trillion U.S. health care economy. While ICD-10 is a separate mandate from Obamacare, it enables more detailed analysis of healthcare outcomes under The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. It sets the standard for data stored in electronic medical records, part of the HITECH Act and Meaningful Use of Electronic Health Records under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). Future data exchanged in health information exchanges (HIEs) will utilize ICD-10, and ICD-10 will be a key component for analyzing population health management. Health Insurance Exchanges will provide greater access to insurance, which in turn will use ICD-10 as part of the coverage determination rules for Americans. ICD-10 high impact medical specialties for providers include: Orthopedics, Obstetrics, and Cardiology and Vascular surgery among others.
