LEHIGH ACRES, Fla., Nov. 27, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Lehigh Regional Medical Center, a member of Prime Healthcare, is pleased to announce Ivan Mazzorana Jr., M.D., will join its medical staff.
Gary Bell, Chief Executive Officer at Lehigh Regional Medical Center stated, "The hospital will provide electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) working with Dr. Mazzorana, a leading psychiatrist in southwest Florida and a recognized expert in ECT, and the timeline for beginning the needed ECT service is spring 2018."
When asked about this treatment option, Dr. Mazzorana stated, "ECT remains the standard of care for treatment-resistant major depression. ECT involves a series of treatments under brief anesthesia that ultimately results in wellness by resetting circuits in the brain, much like rebooting a computer. The plan is to provide this treatment option at Lehigh Regional Medical Center this spring."
The National Institute of Mental Health reports, "Major depression is one of the most common mental disorders in the United States. In 2015, an estimated 16.1 million adults aged 18 or older in the United States had at least one major depressive episode in the past year. This number represented 6.7% of all U.S. adults."
