Expensify Bringing Silicon Valley Jobs to Michigan's Upper Peninsula
SAN FRANCISCO and IRONWOOD, Mich., Aug. 14, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Expensify, a financial tech startup based in San Francisco, is making moves to hire more talent in the Ironwood, MI area. The company's Ironwood roster includes 13 full-time and over 45 part-time staff in Michigan's Upper Peninsula area and they're currently looking for more to join the family.
On Tuesday, August 19, 2014, the Expensify team will be hosting a Happy Hour / Casual Job Fair from 5PM to 8PM at Tacconelli's Restaurant on 215 S. Suffolk St, Ironwood. Anyone interested in customer service, software development, or data entry positions are encouraged to stop by, drop off a resume, and chat with the team over drinks and appetizers. "We're looking for the best and brightest talent, and we think that the UP is a great place to find that," says David Barrett, CEO.
This initiative is just the most recent step Expensify has taken to support the local community. Out of those 58 employees in the UP, at least 30 have graduated from Gogebic Community College (GCC). "Most of the jobs offered in the area are labor-focused, so it's great to be able to give people the opportunity to work at a tech startup without having to leave the area," says Tim Szot, Global Team Manager at Expensify. Szot himself is a graduate of GCC and one of the main forces behind building the Expensify team in Michigan since joining in October 2013.
Expensify and GCC have been working together for the past year and a half on initiatives to cultivate talent in the local community. This May, Expensify established and awarded the first scholarship program at GCC for Computer Science and IT majors, offering a $1,000 scholarship to a freshman each year. In addition, Expensify is working with GCC to create curriculum focused on both subjects, with the first PHP class to launch Spring 2015.
"I see the relationship with GCC and Expensify as one of the most positive things to happen to our area and to the IT Program since I started teaching at GCC 26 years ago," says Jim Halverson, GCC's lead computer instructor. "Expensify is hiring graduates from my Information Technology Program and they're working with GCC to keep our curriculum current and relevant. It's been great having them on campus! I believe the startup has and will continue to have a positive impact on the Gogebic Range."
Members of the San Francisco team will be visiting the Upper Peninsula from August 18th - 22nd to connect with the local community and meet the other half of the team. For more information on the event, visit http://blog.expensify.com/2014/08/14/UP-Invasion.
