Exelon Generation to Develop 195 MW of New electric capacity in Medway, MA
MEDWAY, Mass., Feb. 5, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Exelon Generation announced this week it will add 195 megawatts (MW) of highly efficient, fast-starting electric generation capacity to help meet future energy needs in New England. Two new generation units will be built as an expansion to Exelon's existing generating facility in Medway, MA.
The units will operate primarily during times of peak energy demand. Both units will run mainly on natural gas, but will have the ability to run on ultra-low-sulfur distillate fuel oil as a back-up, ensuring fuel diversity and reliability.
The state-of-the-art units will enhance the reliability of the New England region's electric system, and provide a fast-starting back-up for intermittent renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind.
Both generating units will be equipped with the latest emissions control technology and will meet all applicable federal and state environmental regulations.
Exelon Generation is currently in the permitting phase for the Medway expansion. Construction is expected to begin in 2017 and be completed by mid-year 2018.
"We are excited to develop this new project in the greater Boston area," said Ron DeGregorio, president, Exelon Power and senior vice president, Exelon Generation. "This project demonstrates the new 'pay for performance' capacity construct works and that it will attract development of new resources needed in the region."
Exelon Generation currently owns and operates approximately 2,200 MW of both combined cycle and peaking generation in the Boston area, including the existing three-unit oil-fired 117 MW peaking facility in Medway, where the expansion will be built.
