WASHINGTON, Nov. 10, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The president has announced his intention to circumvent Congress and use executive action to legalize millions of illegal aliens, either through further suppression of immigration enforcement or by granting them work permits. A new report from the Center for Immigration Studies examines a specific population of potential beneficiaries: illegal aliens "with 10-year-old removal orders." The report finds that such a constitutionally suspect action would be contrary to the national interest because it would undermine the laws written by Congress and would legalize aliens who are a threat to public safety.
The study, based on an analysis of 10 years of ICE deportation records, finds that an executive action protecting aliens with "10-year-old removal orders" would benefit some of the most egregious immigration scofflaws, including the man recently arrested for killing two sheriff's deputies in northern California. The majority of those deported in the last 10 years who met this definition were convicted criminals. In addition, most of these individuals had multiple deportations on their record. The study finds that in 2012 and 2013, 80 percent of aliens removed who had 10-year-old outstanding removal orders were convicted criminals, and 66 percent had multiple deportation orders on their record.

"Pro-amnesty advocates would like to have an expiration date for removal orders," said Jessica Vaughan, Director of Policy Studies and co-author of the study. "But lawmakers and the public should be extremely skeptical of any proposal that rewards illegal aliens just because they have managed to defy immigration laws for a certain length of time. Instead, Congress should direct funding for ICE specifically to locate and remove repeat and long-term immigration scofflaws from the country."
