ARLINGTON, Va., Oct. 24, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Excella Consulting, a technology consulting firm based in Arlington, Virginia, is proud to announce the opening of a student-staffed office on the campus of the University of Maryland in College Park. The program, known as Excella's Extension Center, employs computer science and engineering students to work part-time with the firm's consultants on client projects, while receiving training in software development and best practices. The Extension Center at Maryland will be located at the Technology Ventures Building in M Square, across from the College Park Metro station.

The Extension Center concept was developed to provide Excella's clients with high-quality remote service delivery at an affordable cost, while also providing students an opportunity to gain real-world experience in software development. Excella recruits students to work on projects using technologies like Python, Django, Java and .Net. Students then work side-by-side with full-time Excella consultants to develop IT solutions for organizations around Washington D.C.
"We teach our team members to build solutions, not just software," says Margaret Archer, Extension Center Manager. "The Extension Center at Maryland is a great opportunity for students to get real-world experience that works with their class schedule."
Excella currently operates an Extension Center on the campus of Virginia Tech in Blacksburg that has resulted in over 30 student hires since opening in 2009. The University of Maryland was chosen as Excella's second program because of its location, academic rankings and the quality of its engineering and computer science programs. Honors programs such as QUEST and Hinman CEO's that attract highly motivated students were also a factor in the choice.
"In QUEST, we recognize the advantage of learning by doing," says Kylie Goodell, Assistant Director of the QUEST Honors Program at Maryland. "This is something that Excella values, as well. I am excited about the opening of Excella's new Extension Center and know that it will benefit current and future Maryland students."
