CAMPBELL, Calif., Aug. 8, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Exalt Communications today announced that several models of its Air Series microwave backhaul radios can immediately take advantage of the recent ruling from the Federal Communications Commission allowing the use of wider channels in the 6 GHz Lower and 11 GHz bands. Service providers and other network operators can now use Exalt ExploreAir and ExtremeAir systems to provide twice the single-carrier capacity achievable before the ruling – without the need to buy additional hardware.

In response to the explosive growth in the demand for broadband services, the FCC has ruled that allowing wider channels in the 6 GHz and 11 GHz bands will allow service providers and other network operators to handle more capacity and offer faster data rates at much lower CAPEX than is currently possible. The use of wider channels results in dramatically lower equipment cost per megabit-per-second (Mbps) of data throughput and can more fully support economical broadband expansion in areas that present unique logistical, geographic, or population density challenges. Such capabilities help accomplish the FCC's goal of allowing consumers living and working outside of urban cores to reap the same benefits to which city dwellers have become accustomed.
Exalt specifically designed ExploreAir, ExploreAir LR, ExploreAir HP, and ExtremeAir radios to support the 80 MHz channels now available in the 11 GHz frequency band. The company's newest ExploreAir system, ExploreAir LR, also supports the 60 MHz channels now available in the 6 GHz Lower band.
"We've known all along that supporting 60 and 80 MHz channels would be immensely useful to our customers, given the challenges facing our industry," said Mark Davis, Exalt senior director of product marketing. "In fact, many of our customers have designed their networks around ExploreAir and ExtremeAir systems in anticipation of this ruling. Our commitment to creating the most technologically advanced and forward-thinking microwave backhaul systems has once again delivered dramatic savings to our customers and made Exalt the first – and only – company able to offer this cost per-megabit per-second advantage."
