NEW YORK, May 18, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Everyday Health, Inc. (NYSE: EVDY), announced today, in partnership with New York University's (NYU) Science, Health, and Environmental Reporting Program (SHERP), the first recipient of the Marianne D. Mattera MedPage Today SHERP Scholarship Fund. The scholarship fund was created to honor the distinguished medical journalism of MedPage Today managing editor Marianne D. Mattera, who died in 2014. Everyday Health is a leading digital health and wellness company that owns MedPage Today.
Sandy Ong, the scholarship fund's first beneficiary, will be moving to New York in September to begin her journalism studies. She is currently a Senior Medical Writer at Havas Life Medicom, a healthcare communications agency in London. Ong covers therapy areas such as diabetes, vaccines, rare diseases and asthma therapy. She enjoys writing for patients, who live every day of their lives with a disease, and for their families, who support and care for them every step of the way. Ong's peer-reviewed publication about forensic identification was published in the journal Science & Justice in 2012. Ong has a Master's degree in Forensic Science from King's College London.
"We are honored to award this scholarship to Sandy and feel that her commitment and passion for medical journalism truly honors Marianne's memory," said Ben Wolin, CEO and Co-Founder, Everyday Health. "It is critical that we encourage, mentor and contribute to the success of the next generation of journalists and continue to provide high-quality medical and healthcare content to consumers and healthcare professionals."
The scholarship will be awarded to journalism students in NYU's Science, Health, and Environmental Reporting Program who show exceptional promise in medical journalism. In addition, recipients of the award will have access to Everyday Health and MedPage Today employees who will serve in mentorship roles. The scholarship is a $5,000 tuition credit to be applied to the first semester of study. For more information about the scholarship, including a list of donors, please visit NYU's SHERP website.
In her career as a medical journalist, which spanned more than 30 years, Ms. Mattera won a record 18 Jesse H. Neal Awards from the Association of Business Information and Media Companies, considered the highest honor in specialized journalism. Prior to MedPage Today, Ms. Mattera was editor in chief of Medical Economics magazine and editor of RN, a clinical journal for nurses. She also edited two books for nurses during her career.
"We're so grateful to Everyday Health and the other Mattera Fund donors for investing in the future of medical journalism via promising young reporters like Sandy Ong," said SHERP Director Dan Fagin, an associate professor of journalism at NYU's Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute. "Marianne Mattera was a wonderful mentor to so many editors and reporters, and now the donors to this fund are ensuring that her legacy continues. We're looking forward to working with Everyday Health and MedPage Today to ensure a great experience for Sandy and future Mattera scholars."
