Evergreen Neurologist Edits First Key Textbook on Inpatient Neurological Care
KIRKLAND, Wash., Aug. 31, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Evergreen Healthcare today announced that expert neurologist Dr. David J. Likosky has co-edited the first authoritative text on the emerging neurohospitalist field, a relatively new specialty that delivers neurological disease treatment to patients in a hospital setting.
The textbook, Neurohospitalist Medicine, is scheduled for release in October 2011 and will be a key resource for clinicians caring for neurologic patients in the hospital.
Dr. Likosky, a member of the Evergreen Healthcare staff since 2000, is the director of Evergreen's award-winning stroke program, which was recognized by HealthGrades for the past two years as the best stroke program in Washington state and is among the top 5 percent of programs in the nation.
Nationally, the neurohospitalist specialty has evolved rapidly over the past five years as the need for hospital-based neurological care has increased. In a recent article in the peer-reviewed academic journal The Neurohospitalist, Dr. Likosky discussed the importance of inpatient neurologist practitioners and their role in improving outcomes of all inpatients with neurological disease, as well as helping to prevent its occurrence in others.
"Evergreen is incredibly fortunate to have Dr. Likosky's leadership and exceptional talent guiding our renowned stroke program," said Evergreen Healthcare CEO Bob Malte. "His skill and thought-leadership in the neurohospitalist specialty, along with that of many of our many remarkable clinicians across the organization, allow us to continue providing the highest quality care to patients."
In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Likosky recently co-founded the Neurohospitalist Society, a professional organization for neurohospitalists, is on the editorial board of The Neurohospitalist journal, and directed courses at the annual meetings of the American Academy of Neurology and the Society of Hospital Medicine. He is published in the textbook Principles and Practice of Hospital Medicine; Continuum, the continuing education publication for the American Academy of Neurology; The Neurohospitalist; and he co-authored a forthcoming white paper on seizures for the Society of Hospital Medicine.
Dr. Likosky also spoke this year at the New York State Symposium on Neurological Emergencies and Neurocritical Care and the Utah Stroke Symposium. He will speak this fall at the first national meeting of Specialty Hospitalists cosponsored by the American Hospital Association. He is a past board member of the Evergreen Healthcare Foundation and a past president of the medical staff at Evergreen Hospital.
