"We are very proud of this innovative core reading program and are eager to begin working with EVSC," said Vincent Grosso, vice president, National Geographic Learning. "Common Core Standards require that reading instruction contains a balance of literary and informational texts, and due to an exclusive agreement with the National Geographic Society, we are the only company that can integrate the world's most visual and engaging informational multimedia into our learning materials. We are helping to bring the world into the classroom using vivid pictures and videos, real-world stories from National Geographic Explorers and interactive content via myNGconnect.com. Reach for Reading will not only help EVSC students learn to read, but also how to read to learn."
"We are pleased that the School Board has approved Reach for Reading as our new core reading program," said Velinda Stubbs, director of language arts and literacy support, EVSC. "We recognize the unique qualities that this program has to offer our students and believe that the mix of authentic literature and informational text from National Geographic will deeply engage our students and keep them excited about learning and reading."
The Reach for Reading program features multicultural literature paired with exclusive content from National Geographic and real-world accounts from famous National Geographic Explorers. The program was constructed by a team of industry-leading authors, including Nancy Frey, Patricia Edwards and Deborah Short, among others, and was built around Common Core Standards. Reach for Reading goes above and beyond simple compliance of the standards and thoroughly applies the shifts of the Common Core to the program. It is built on three basic principles that will help each classroom within EVSC to achieve reading success – Common Core State Standards; National Geographic Content; and Content-based Instruction.
