A partir del 1 de septiembre de 2017 comenzará a funcionar el European XFEL - el mayor laser de rayos-X del mundo. La instalación de investigación, que tiene un valor de 1.220 millones de euros y están situadas en la región metropolitana de Hamburgo, implican a 11 países de Europa.

La instalación son un proyecto de superlativos: con 27.000 flashes de rayos-X por segundo y una luminosidad 1.000 millones de veces superior a la de las mejores Fuentes convencionales de rayos-X, XFEL abrirá enteramente nuevas oportunidades de investigación y ayudará a trascender los actuales vínculos de la investigación de la ciencia. Permitirá a los científicos internacionales descifrar la composición molecular de los virus y células, tomando imágenes de tres dimensiones del nanomundo, reacciones químicas de películas y procesos de estudios que se producen muy dentro de los planetas. XFEL ayudará a desarrollar, por ejemplo, nuevos medicamentos y nuevos materiales.

Este viernes, la instalación se lanzará a través de la Ministra de Investigación de Alemania, Johanna Wanka, el Primer Alcalde de Hamburgo, Olaf Scholz, el Ministro de Ciencias de Schleswig-Holstein, Karin Prien, el Asesor del Presidente de Rusia, Andrei Fursenko, el Ministro de Investigación de Francia, Frédérique Vidal, y otros representantes de alta graduación. A ellos se unirán varios investigadores externos, que actualmente están preparando sus primeros experimentos a mediados de septiembre.

XFEL es una organización sin ánimo de lucro que colabora de cerca con DESY Hamburg y otras instituciones internacionales. Emplea a unas 300 personas. Con un coste de 1.200 millones de euros en su construcción y lanzamiento y un sistema de túnel de 3,4 kilómetros que llega hasta el estado de Schleswig-Holstein, está entre los proyectos de investigación más grandes y ambiciosos de Europa. Están implicados 11 países: Dinamarca, Francia, Alemania, Hungría, Italia, Polonia, Rusia, Eslovaquia, España, Suecia, Suiza y el Reino Unido está en proceso de unión. Para Hamburgo como localización de ciencias y negocios, XFEL supone un paso más hacia el establecimiento de sí misma como centro de innovación internacional.
