European Ventral Hernia Biologics Market to Triple Over the Next Five Years
Leading Biologics Competitors LifeCell, Covidien, and Cook will Experience Major Gains Through 2015, according to Millennium Research Group
TORONTO, Nov. 22, 2010 /PRNewswire/ -- According to Millennium Research Group (MRG), the global authority on medical technology market intelligence, the European market for ventral hernia biologic mesh, comprising xenograft sales only, will triple in size over the next five years.
Through 2015, strong growth in the biologic mesh market will accompany rising awareness among surgeons of the devices' effectiveness for complicated hernia repairs. Leading competitors—including Cook, Covidien, C. R. Bard, and LifeCell—have placed a greater focus on promoting the benefits of biologic mesh for ventral hernia repairs, which will increase adoption of the devices in the coming years. In particular, LifeCell has capitalized on interest in xenograft meshes, and has experienced remarkable growth over 2009. In addition, biologic mesh sales will be fueled by the adoption of tension-free repairs by newly practicing surgeons satisfied with the benefits associated with ventral hernia meshes. There are, however, larger variances in the uptake of biologic meshes in the four major European countries.
"The UK is the largest market for sales of biologic meshes due to favorable government reimbursement and strong surgeon acceptance of the product," says Shriram Venkataramana, Analyst at MRG. "Favorable responses to these products from key opinion leaders in Italy has speeded this adoption, and the xenograft mesh market is set to expand at a rapid rate in Italy and Germany. In France, however, sales of biologic meshes have been less prominent."
MRG's European Markets for Soft Tissue Repair Devices 2011 report provides critical insight into trends that will fuel and limit market growth for soft tissue repair devices in Europe, with coverage of France, Germany, Italy, and the UK. The report includes a breakdown of unit volumes, average selling prices, and market values for devices used in vaginal slings, ventral hernia repair, inguinal hernia repair, pelvic floor reconstruction, and dural repair in addition to an extensive breakdown of procedure volumes.
