Biopsy tissue taken from patients during different stages of disease yields a wealth of phenotypic and metabolic information used to understand disease mechanisms. The tissue sample is priceless and often cannot be easily replaced. A consequence of having to stabilize the sample immediately is that scientists are forced to choose a single media, which is often a fixative such as formalin. Even though formalin fixation is simple and inexpensive, it limits many downstream bioassays that can be used, including antibodies used for detection of cellular proteins. Flash freezing is an alternative, but is also problematic to conduct cell culture or test active cytoplasmic enzymes.
