ESPN's Hugo Balta to Discuss Recognizing and Addressing Unconscious Bias at June 28 PRSA-LA Event
LOS ANGELES, June 21, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Hugo Balta, Senior Director of Multicultural Content at ESPN Digital and Print Media, will be speaking at an event hosted by PRSA-LA on June 28 titled "Recognizing and Addressing the Undetected Crisis: Unconscious Bias and the PR Practitioner." This is a lunch event at Maggiano's at The Grove Los Angeles.
While outright prejudice and stereotyping are problems PR practitioners look for, often the greatest threat is easily overlooked: unconscious bias. Unconscious biases are prejudices people have, but are unaware of; they are subconscious mental shortcuts based on past experiences and beliefs. And we all have them.
"Communications professionals are often the first to recognize the need for their clients and employers to change their tone and behavior," said Mr. Balta. "This event gives communication professionals an opportunity to be both ahead of the curve and more insightful when communicating with an internal and/or external audience."
Hugo Balta is an experienced Broadcasting, Digital Media professional directing growth, change and innovation in several divisions and business cycles for English and Spanish language markets. Mr. Balta's award winning 30 year career includes leadership roles with CBS, Telemundo, NBC and ESPN. He is also a Diversity & Inclusion expert coaching organizations in creating workplace awareness resulting in strategies to grow cultural sensibilities and business opportunities.
"PRSA-LA is fortunate and grateful to be able to have a speaker of Mr. Balta's experience and wisdom on this topic," said Victoria Lelash, President of PRSA-LA. "Practitioners in our field are facing an environment that is radically different from even five years ago. The audience is empowered as never before which presents a perfect opportunity to be at the forefront of such a vibrant new time."
