The article http://wapo.st/1pz4Y5c is entitled, "How one firm navigated Washington's choppy waters" and flourished. "When the clouds of budget cuts gathered in Washington a few years ago," the story details how ESN President and CEO Raymond F. Lopez, Jr. cut costs and put into place its diversification strategy to make his business more efficient. This followed Mr. Lopez' earlier company strategy to expand its defense services offerings from a Navy-centric one to a more diversified IT one.
"You've got to be able to look forward and take on acceptable risks to survive," he told Capital Business. Growing from a small start-up in 1995 to a $38 million-a-year enterprise, Mr. Lopez talked about how his plan to expand helped ESN land a five-year, $38 million IT services contract with the Air Force.
In the July/August issue of SmartCEO magazine, Mr. Lopez talked about ESN's longstanding successful employee retention program (http://bit.ly/1oWTA0I). "We have recruiting services, and then we have employee referrals. We tell our folks that everybody is in business development. The third part is an excellent benefits package. The first thing we do when we hire someone is give them a 'welcome aboard' package. They get a shirt, a coffee cup, pens, pencils, lanyards, etc."
Ray encourages ESN employees to work as a team. "Within two or three weeks of a new employee starting at ESN, they got a call from me," he said. "Some of the folks that come from larger companies are like, 'What? You're calling me right now to tell me hello? An open-door environment is very important to me."
