DENVER, Nov, 12, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Collaboration can bring education to new heights. For the past year, eScience Labs, LLC has joined with Oregon State University (OSU) in Corvallis, OR, to provide resources for students in OSU Ecampus' online graduate-level course "Instruments and Online Interactions in the Sciences." With the rapid expansion of online education, the OSU course emphasizes the need for teachers to be prepared for the shift to more online education, including resources for online, distance delivery science lab instruction. As part of this innovative course, eScience Labs provides OSU students with a customized set of hands-on experiments and curricular materials that might be applied in their own online classrooms.
OSU students in this class (offered online twice a year) work with a number of delivery modes, including virtual labs, lab packs, kitchen science, field work, and data mining, critically evaluating how these modes of distance lab delivery help meet science learning outcomes in their educational setting. The eScience Labs products provide an important real sampling of other fully customizable physical lab kits that contain neatly packaged modules, chemicals, and equipment for hands-on experiments. The partnership between OSU and eScience Labs allows students to receive practical experience in providing science lab content in flexible learning environments.
Many instructors hesitate to even consider developing a distance lab science course, either as a part of an online course or coupled with traditional face-to-face classes. However, according to chemistry professor Dr. Michael Lerner, one of the course instructors, research indicates that "distance methods can attain learning outcomes at least comparable to those for a conventional classroom or lab experience in the development of foundational lab concepts." Consistent with this research, eScience Labs offers students the opportunity to mirror the hands-on experimentation traditionally found only in face-to-face educational settings.
OSU offers CH584 (3-credits) each Fall and Summer term through OSU Ecampus (ecampus.oregonstate.edu/chemistry). The Fall term is 10 weeks, and the Summer term a compressed 4-week version.
Established in 2007, eScience Labs partners with over 300 institutions to provide lab solutions for online science courses. eScience Labs' kits are fully customizable and offer students a flexible, hands –on learning experience anytime, anywhere. eScience Labs is located in Denver, Colorado.
