Equatorial Guinea Opens New School in Mongomo as Part of the Horizon 2020 Goals

MALABO, Equatorial Guinea, Aug. 2, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- As part of Equatorial Guinea's (Republica de Guinea Ecuatorial) efforts to boost education in the country, President Obiang Nguema Mbasogo recently inaugurated a new school "Maria Mbasogo Ngu" in Mongomo. The government fully funded the school with 150 million CFA francs.

"The goal of the country is to promote children as their most important asset," said the director of the new center, Victoriana Mbasogo. The new school will admit 240 students from kindergarten to secondary school and will accommodate 54 of them, as there are available bedrooms for those students who need to remain in school because of the remoteness of their homes. The new school also counts with eight classrooms, industrial kitchen, offices, study room, theater, and other areas.

The construction of the new school comes from the initiative of the First Lady, Constancia Mangue de Obiang, who is also Chairwoman of the Child Support Committee of Equatorial Guinea (CANIGE). The new school inauguration, attended by Minister of Education, Joaquin Mbana Nchama, the Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mangue, and the Secretary General of the Democratic Party of Equatorial Guinea, and Lucas Nguema Esono, is part of Equatorial Guinea's Horizon 2020 goals.

Education is one of the priorities outlined in Equatorial Guinea's Horizon 2020 development plan, which was set in motion by President Obiang to move the country toward a sustainable and emergent economy. The plan includes the development of new schools and teacher training.

Since beginning the large-scale export of oil from Equatorial Guinea, and in cooperation with international organizations, the country opened its first national university, the National University of Equatorial Guinea (UNGE), and has graduated more than 13,000 students since its founding in 1995. The level of education in Equatorial Guinea is improving, and the country enjoys an enrollment rate of nearly 5,000 students at the college level.
