Small Dose Syringe Designed Especially for Veterinary and Pediatric Use
ASHEVILLE, North Carolina, March 18, 2014 /PRNewswire/ --
Equashield (http://www.equashield.com), the leading provider of Closed System Transfer Devices (CSTD) for hazardous drugs, today announced the launch of the SU-1, 1 ml closed system Syringe Unit. The 1 ml syringe was designed for use by veterinarians treating cancer in animals, as well as for pediatric care by pediatric oncologists. The new syringe is the next in Equashield's line of simple, safe and completely closed CSTDs.

"With our smaller patients, such as cats and small dogs, the 1ml closed syringe system allows safe and effective treatment with the smaller chemotherapy doses needed for the treatment of their cancer," said Dr. Joseph A. Impellizeri, DVM, DACVIM, MRCVS, Board Certified Veterinary Oncologist and Medical Director of Veterinary Oncology Services, PLLC (http://www.petcancerinformation.com). "The addition of this system to existing Equashield product continues to prioritize a culture of safety with chemotherapy administration in veterinary medicine."
Like the other products in Equashield's line, the SU-1 is a Closed System Transfer Device with closed pressure equalization and "dry" connectors integrated into a unique syringe. The encapsulated syringe barrel prevents plunger contamination and accidental disconnections. The pre-assembled syringe connects with a single motion to corresponding adaptors for vials, IV bags and tubing.
"Unlike larger syringes, 1ml syringes face extreme pressure even when minimal force is applied. Therefore, using a CSTD with effective closed pressure equalization is essential to prevent exposure to the drug and its vapor," said Marino Kriheli, product manager at Equashield. "Our new 1 ml syringe will allow both pediatric oncologists and veterinarians to treat cancer in a safer manner and protect them from exposure to hazardous drugs."
Equashield is a Silver Sponsor and exhibitor at this year's Veterinary Cancer Society Mid-Year Conference in Asheville, NC (March 16-19), one of two major VCS conferences held every year. The VCS Mid-Year Conference will bring together two key organizations in veterinary oncology, The Veterinary Cancer Society and The Veterinary Society of Surgical Oncology.
