EPA's Latest Notice an Admission that Costly Power Plan Is a Glorious Mess
WASHINGTON, Oct. 29, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- National Mining Association's President and CEO Hal Quinn called EPA's notice requesting alternatives to the agency's power plant rules a frank admission that the proposal is a glorious mess.
"The Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) notice requesting comments on alternatives for its Costly Power Plan is a frank admission that the plan is a 'glorious mess' forcing the agency to deploy procedural belts and suspenders to hold it together. With enormous costs and unmeasurable benefits, the only option EPA should consider is withdrawal of this symbolic but expensive gesture on climate change," Quinn said.
Quinn also noted the irony of EPA's notice appearing the same day the agency's Associate Administrator Joel Beauvais dismissed a series of studies showing that the agency's plan will lead to double-digit increases in power and energy bills.
"It may be easy to dismiss the obvious when you cannot explain what your own rule actually requires, but there should be no mistake about the direction EPA's plan will take American's energy bills---and that is straight up from here. EPA's assurances to the contrary inspire little confidence. After all, this is the same agency whose cost estimate for its last power plant rules has proven to be underestimated by at least a factor of ten," Quinn said.
