JERSEY CITY, N.J., Nov. 16, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has chosen Datapipe as one of ten organizations nationwide to receive a Green Power Leadership Award for its green power purchase. The annual awards recognize the country's leading green power users for their commitment and contribution to advance the development of the nation's voluntary green power market. The EPA presented the award to Datapipe, a global provider of managed services and infrastructure for outsourced IT and cloud computing, at an event held in conjunction with the 2011 Renewable Energy Markets Conference in San Francisco, Calif., on November 16, 2011.

Datapipe is currently purchasing nearly 56 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of green power annually to meet 100 percent of the organization's electricity use. According to the U.S. EPA, this is equivalent to avoiding the carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions of nearly 7,000 passenger vehicles per year, or the CO2 emissions from the electricity use of nearly 6,000 average American homes annually.
"EPA's Green Power Leadership Award winners are driving the development of new renewable energy sources and demonstrating that green power makes good environmental and business sense," said Gina McCarthy, assistant administrator for the EPA. "We applaud Datapipe's efforts and hope that other organizations follow their lead."
Green power is electricity that is generated from environmentally preferable renewable resources, such as wind, solar, geothermal, biogas, biomass, and low-impact hydro. Purchases of green power help accelerate the development of new renewable energy capacity nationwide and help reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the power sector.
"In an industry known for considerable power consumption, Datapipe has a responsibility to continually support long-term sustainability worldwide," said Robb Allen, Datapipe CEO. "We are grateful to receive this recognition from the EPA commending our initiative to power our U.S. facilities with 100 percent renewable energy."
Beyond the utilization of renewable energy, Datapipe has made it a priority to take conservation measures into account at each of its data centers. For example, Datapipe utilizes a 99 percent efficient Universal Power Source Energy Saver System and has installed an Econo Cooling Configuration, which optimizes the efficiency of Computer Room Air Conditioning (CRAC) units, resulting in a 55 percent power savings. In addition to supporting clean energy, Datapipe supports several internal green initiatives. These include recycling and waste reduction programs, mass transit incentives and sustainable services, such as paperless billing.
