Environmental Activist, Creator of Largest Fair-Trade Organic Network in India - Miami Conference July 13
MIAMI, May 20 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Renowned environmental activist and author Dr. Vandana Shiva is the featured speaker at "Ecological Integrity: Reconnecting Humans, Health and Habitat," a conference that explores the links between a balanced environment, the protection of biodiversity and the health of vulnerable populations, within the context of small-scale organic agriculture. The event is hosted by the Center for Earth Jurisprudence with St. Thomas University and Barry University as co-presenters and partners.
Dr. Shiva is the founder of Navdanya, a movement that has helped to create the largest fair-trade, organic network in India, and that, via the courts and peaceful resistance, has opposed the spread of GMOs in India. She is joined by her sister, Dr. Mira Shiva, director of the Initiative for Health Equity and Society, who has devoted three decades to the healthcare issues confronting disenfranchised populations; Leonie Hermantin, deputy director of the Lambi Fund for Haiti; Susan Luck, director of the EarthRose Institute; and Dr. Mahadev Bhat, FIU associate professor of environmental economics and co-director of FIU's Agroecology Program.
The conference will take place Tuesday, July 13, 2010 at the Sofitel Miami, 5800 Blue Lagoon Drive in Miami from 2:30 to 5:45 p.m. General admission is $45; students $15. The dinner's keynote address will be given by Dr. Shiva and is open to the general public at $50 with student tickets at $25.
