BIRMINGHAM, Ala., Nov. 7, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- A half marathon isn't a conventional requirement at most colleges. But at Highlands College, the entire traditional student body participates each year in the 13.1-mile run. Students have mixed reactions in August as they begin the school year and realize they have ten weeks to prepare for the challenge. But the process of training brings students together as they often form small groups to encourage and hold each other accountable.
The half marathon is part of an overall commitment to the holistic development of Highlands College Students which includes a meal plan and gym membership. Lunch is catered daily by Mealfit, a local company providing healthy, fresh meals with no preservatives or GMOs. Students also follow stringent work out requirements through Life Time Fitness, a world-class facility located minutes from campus. "We are taking the next step in enhancing the health and wellness program to achieve our institutional goal of all students leading a healthy, active lifestyle," said Mark Pettus, President of Highlands College. "I can tell you from personal experience that a commitment to health and wellness has changed my life and strengthened my faith." Pettus is an avid runner and former college football player at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
