BOSTON, Nov. 16, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Actifio, the copy data virtualization company, today released results from a survey exploring trends in application development among enterprises. Conducted by third party researcher TechValidate, the study of 173 companies found that while most respondents acknowledge facing time consuming and expensive roadblocks in provisioning data for application testing and development, the majority do not have plans in place to overcome those hurdles.
The study found nearly 60% of respondents are contending with release cycles of one to six months or longer for a majority of their mission-critical applications. Respondents pointed to lack of automation in executing test cases (44%,) as well as lack of continuous integration testing and losing time in fixing integration problems (41%) as causes of these extended timeframes.
Despite this, only 4% of respondents said they were currently leveraging copy data virtualization (CDV) to enable self-serve, instant access to high fidelity test data for developers. Recent industry analyst reports have identified CDV as an emerging way to build higher quality applications faster. CDV helps accelerate application release cycles by providing near instant virtual copies of production data.
Additional highlights of the findings included:
- 42% of respondents are spending the most time during their application release cycles refreshing copies with changes from production data and 38% noted protecting and recovering test environments quickly to reduce development and testing downtime as their most time-intensive activity.
- Cloning production data and copying it to test environments was the most popular way respondents were provisioning their data to lower environments (46%).
- 85% of respondents considered accelerating application release cycles by adopting agile practices, continuous integration, and continuous delivery to be important or very important.
"This survey confirms what we've been hearing from customers for years: the inaccessibility of conventionally managed copy data is bogging down release cycles, backup, and disaster recovery," said Actifio CEO, Ash Ashutosh. "Our customers know virtualizing their copy data transforms these processes, giving Dev more access and Ops more control while saving time and money for the business. As the concept of copy data virtualization pioneered by Actifio continues to spread, these challenges will become a thing of the past."
Actifio virtualizes data much the same way a hypervisor virtualizes compute, decoupling increasingly strategic enterprise data from increasingly commoditized enterprise infrastructure. To date more than 1200 enterprises in 37 countries around the globe have chosen Actifio's Copy Data Virtualization platform.
