Enterprise CarShare Drives Advanced Degree of Sustainability at Princeton University
Princeton official: "CarShare is a huge piece of our programming and becoming more popular every year."
ST. LOUIS, July 26, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Enterprise CarShare has partnered with Transportation & Parking Services (TPS) at Princeton University in a sustainability drive to help reduce campus traffic congestion while also meeting student needs for on-demand transportation. A service of Enterprise Rent-A-Car, Enterprise CarShare offers an automated way to rent a vehicle by the hour, the day, or overnight.
Over the past several years, transportation options around the Princeton campus have grown with bike sharing, mass transit, and carpooling options available. However, a key piece of transportation, on-demand vehicles, was still missing. Planners quickly realized that carsharing could improve problems of traffic congestion while also addressing transportation shortfalls. That's how the Enterprise CarShare program at Princeton was born.
Reducing Campus Congestion
The university recently began an effort to reduce the number of single-occupancy vehicles on campus. As of fall 2016, most undergraduate students were no longer allowed to park vehicles on campus during the academic year.
To encourage faculty and staff to leave their cars at home, Princeton's Transportation & Parking Services implemented the Revise Your Ride program last year. The program includes automatic enrollment in the Enterprise CarShare program along with other incentives. Graduate students and undergraduates are also eligible for the Enterprise CarShare program.
Almost 1,000 students, faculty, and staff are now using carsharing services to reach their destinations. The service provides a unique transportation option that contributes to the long-term sustainability goals of the university, which include a commitment to reduce commuter car numbers by 750 (15 percent) between now and 2020.
The Enterprise CarShare partnership with TPS has tripled in size since its inception and today provides 17 vehicles available for rent around-the-clock at nine locations across the 500-acre Princeton campus, including:
- Dillon Gym
- First Campus Center
- Graduate College
- Lakeside Apartments
- Lawrence Apartments
- Merwick-Stanworth Apartments
- Olden House
- Princeton Station
"CarShare is a huge piece of our programming and becoming more popular every year because fewer students are bringing cars to Princeton," said Kim Jackson, Director of Transportation and Parking Services at Princeton University. "It has enabled the university to commit to our sustainability objectives by reducing the number of vehicles coming on campus."
"We even have a CarShare pickup truck available now because graduate students who move a lot requested it and Enterprise delivered," added Jackson of Princeton. "I can't say enough good things about how Enterprise has worked with us to find transportation solutions throughout the years."
Drivers can rent vehicles through Enterprise CarShare by following four easy steps. And, with the Enterprise CarShare app for iPhone and Android users, U.S. members can make or modify reservations, extend rentals and choose pickup locations, all from their mobile device.
Sustainable Transportation Solutions
In the U.S., Enterprise CarShare serves over 125 university campuses and hundreds of business and government agencies in more than 35 states. Major cities served include Atlanta, Hoboken, Honolulu, Houston, Louisville, New York, Philadelphia, St. Louis, and Tampa, all supported by the Enterprise Rent-A-Car network, which has more than 5,800 offices located within 15 miles of 90 percent of the U.S. population.
Enterprise CarShare is a cost-effective alternative to car ownership as well as an environmentally-friendly and hassle-free supplement to public transit. And, since it's backed by Enterprise's award-winning customer service, it delivers convenience and reliability to members in select markets across the country.
"CarShare is a smart way for us to help Princeton achieve its traffic reduction goals on campus while simultaneously offering a unique on-demand transportation option for students, staff, and faculty – when and where they need it," said Kyle Sabie, Corporate Rental Manager who oversees CarShare at Enterprise. "We value our longstanding partnership with Princeton and have evolved our program with them over the years to serve their needs."
Enterprise takes a sustainable approach to business while partnering with companies, agencies, and organizations like Princeton to help them meet their respective sustainability goals. In addition to CarShare, a variety of other sustainable transportation options are available under the Enterprise brand name, including Zimride by Enterprise and Enterprise Rideshare.
Enterprise recently joined a new carsharing pilot program announced by the New York City mayor's office, and became a fleet management partner of Voyage, a company aiming to develop autonomous automotive options for communities across North America.
