WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., Nov. 5, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Entergy today withdrew the Coastal Zone Management Act ("CZMA") consistency certification filed with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission ("NRC") and the New York State Department of State ("NYSDOS") related to the license renewal application for the Indian Point Energy Center. The CZMA consistency certification only concerned state coastal management issues and its withdrawal does not affect Indian Point's other pending license renewal-related proceedings before the NRC and other tribunals.
Entergy withdrew the NRC filing in order to ensure that NYSDOS has the opportunity to review an update to the federally-issued Final Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement ("FSEIS"). The FSEIS update, which the NRC announced yesterday is slated to be issued in March 2016, will reflect the NRC Staff's analysis of new data about Indian Point's impact on the Hudson River. "After carefully evaluating this issue, we concluded that withdrawing the consistency certification is in the best interests of our owners, our employees, and the millions of New York consumers who depend on the reliable, clean power from Indian Point," stated Bill Mohl, President of Entergy Wholesale Commodities. "NYSDOS previously determined in 2013 that it needed to review an earlier FSEIS update before taking action, and we would likewise expect them to consider this new important updated information as well. We have taken this proactive measure to ensure that the most current data is available to NYSDOS before it takes action."
In today's notice of withdrawal, Entergy stated its intention to submit a new consistency certification after the FSEIS update is issued. The submission of a new consistency certification will not delay NRC's final decision on Indian Point license renewal – which is not expected for several years.
