SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif., Dec. 16, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- The 10 destinations along California's Highway 1 Discovery Route (H1DR) in San Luis Obispo County are serious when it comes to their annual Coastal Discovery & Stewardship Celebration. Locals and visitors alike will find more than 35 fun and educational Coastal Discovery events and planned Stewardship Travel activities throughout the Highway 1 Discovery Route (H1DR) from January 15 - February 29, 2016. These special events and activities connect visitors with the land, wildlife, history, people and culture along the H1DR and include the second annual Paso Robles Wine Country BlendFest on the Coast event and a free film festival at the Hearst Castle Theater. Located halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco, the H1DR is made up of ten diverse artisan towns and seaside villages starting just south of Big Sur from Ragged Point & San Simeon, Cambria, Cayucos, and Los Osos/Baywood Park, to Avila Beach & Valley, Edna Valley, Arroyo Grande Valley, Oceano and Nipomo, just south of San Luis Obispo, many offering special lodging packages during the Coastal Discovery & Stewardship six week celebration.
"Throughout the annual Coastal Discovery & Stewardship Celebration guests are invited to explore marine life from abalone to elephant seals, learn about nature preserves, participate in fun citizen science activities, and enjoy the many seaside hikes found on the Central Coast," says Diane Strachan, Stewardship Travel Director for San Luis Obispo County, sponsor of this annual celebration. Filmmaker Judy Irvin's moving film, Pelican Dreams, will be FREE at the Hearst Castle Theater. From the director of The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill, Pelican Dreams follows a wayward California brown pelican rescued from the Golden Gate Bridge into care at a wildlife rehabilitation facility.
Delight in special wine tasting room pairings from 10 wineries located along the Pacific Coast Wine Trail, and numerous Edna Valley, Arroyo Grande Valley and Avila Beach wineries. Take a whale watching adventure or learn about H1DR marine birdlife. There are planned pier and beach walks and a free SeaPhoto App by the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary where guests can browse 631 species and 1,650 photos to upload and share on social media.
