Enhanced Search and Discovery of National Archives and Records Administration's Public Information Powered by Vivisimo
Lockheed Martin and Vivisimo Partner to help NARA Provide the General Public and Professional Researchers Quick Access and Relevant Search Results for Vast Collection of Nation's Records
WASHINGTON, Oct. 5, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Vivisimo, the leader in Information Optimization, announced today that its Velocity Platform has been deployed by Lockheed Martin as the centerpiece of a successful program to improve access to the vast collection of records stored by the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA). Unlike the previous search experience, which made it difficult to accurately locate information quickly, the new search system is specifically designed to make the permanent records of the federal government easier to find online and is available as the National Archives Online Public Access prototype at www.archives.gov/research/search/.

The challenge that Vivisimo and Lockheed Martin faced was to improve both the speed and accuracy of searches across the millions of records housed at the National Archives for the public, professional researchers, and all branches of government. Vivisimo's Velocity Platform was selected for the project as a result of the firm's other accomplishments in meeting the needs of its federal government customers with large, diverse and distributed data collections such as the Social Security Administration, the U.S. Geological Survey, the Defense Intelligence Agency and the U.S. Air Force.
With facilities in 17 states and an informative Internet web site at www.archives.gov, the National Archives and Records Administration is the most accessible archive service in the world. Before Vivisimo's Velocity Platform was deployed by the Lockheed Martin-led team at NARA, users were required to use a serial, silo-approach, accessing several different systems in succession to thoroughly search the archives. Using the Online Public Access prototype, users can now search across all collections with a single query and receive a list of results that are highly relevant to their request. If the user wants to dig deeper into one of the query results produced, Velocity provides a list of other relevant cross matches that may be of interest.
Special features for results presentation and browsing greatly enhance the experience for all users. Topic Clusters generated by Vivisimo's clustering technology and sophisticated federation and indexing engines provide convenient subject navigation of the top results. Searchers can also narrow results by type of archival materials, date, file format, archive location and other properties. In addition, an image viewer integrated by Lockheed Martin provides fast and convenient viewing of the archival images retrieved by the search.
"The National Archive and Records Administration is one of the largest aggregators of individual records in the world and required a technology leader like Vivisimo that could help securely organize and share that information with millions of inquiring people," said Bob Carter, Vice President and General Manager of Federal at Vivisimo. "Today people expect to have information in their hands and on their computer in a matter of seconds. Organizations like NARA, that store millions of records in multiple repositories have made investments to optimize the end-user experience. To meet the ever-growing demand for quick, effective and secure search results for their users, Vivisimo designed the Velocity platform to integrate internal processes, technologies and people in order to maximize the greatest value from the data being stored and accessed independent of the system type or location. Further, Velocity honors the existing security models allowing for reduced total cost of ownership."
According to Jason Seibel, Lockheed Martin's IS&GS-Civil Electronic Records Archive Program Manager, "Our team is committed to NARA's mission to provide public online access to vital national records. As a key member of our team, Vivisimo's contribution has allowed us to offer NARA and the public a cost-effective, user friendly system with an improved search capability."
