Engineering News-Record Presents Award of Excellence to Emergency Bridge Engineer Theodore Zoli
NEW YORK, April 13, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Engineering News-Record (ENR) McGraw-Hill Construction's industry-leading publication and website and part of The McGraw-Hill Companies (NYSE: MHP), has announced that Theodore Zoli, vice president and national bridge chief engineer, HNTB Corporation, has received the 47th Annual Award of Excellence, its highest honor. Zoli received the award in front of more than 900 peers last night at a black-tie awards gala in New York City. He was among ENR's Top 25 Newsmakers of 2012, who were also honored for their impressive achievements.
The editors of ENR selected Zoli as this year's Award of Excellence winner because he solves urgent bridge dilemmas around the world, making them safer while optimizing innovation, practicality, and society's well-being. Zoli has helped with bridges damaged by fire in Afghanistan, as well as several in California, Colorado, Nebraska, West Virginia, and his home state of New York. His 2011 rescue of a failing bridge over Lake Champlain between New York and Vermont restored the only viable crossing for 3,000 residents and one of the first continuous truss road bridges in the nation. Zoli is currently tackling the design of an emergency bridge project between New Hampshire and Maine, where he is bridging not only the land but the demands of the public as well.
"Ted Zoli is a leader who bridges communities and conscience with creativity," said Janice L. Tuchman, editor-in-chief of ENR. "His bridge projects respond to disasters, national security and local community needs, and he prioritizes what is right over any other consideration. In a time of tight budgets, Ted creates innovative yet cost effective solutions and helps stakeholders understand and accept them. ENR is proud to honor him for his outstanding achievements and for changing the industry and the world for the better."
In addition to ENR, Zoli has been featured in Esquire magazine and NBC Nightly News—media attention he uses as a platform to advocate for the world's infrastructure needs. Zoli was also the first in his field to win a MacArthur Foundation Genius Fellowship, which he is using to explore new materials for disaster-relief projects in the name of the public good.
Zoli is featured in the April 16 issue of ENR. For more details on the Top 25 Newsmakers, visit http://enr.construction.com/people/awards/2012/0123-The-Top-25-Newsmakers.asp.
