"Take on Aging as a Sport" encourages readers to approach getting older not as a period of decline, but as a challenge and opportunity to excel in health and wellness. Sharkie suggests rethinking one's perspective on the common signs and symptoms of aging. Instead of problems, these inevitable conditions should be seen as opponents to be bested on the field. To do that, athletes in the "aging game" must scout their opponents, adopt the right training principles, eat to perform, build a supportive team, develop a winning attitude, and take time outs as needed.
"Too many people, even former athletes, imagine aging as a kind of slowing down, and don't take as much care of their health as they should," explains Sharkie. "I want everyone to get off the bench and back into the game. Tackling aging as an athletic pursuit is the best way to ensure you stay in the game and remain productive all the way to the final whistle."
Strong recommendations for "Take on Aging as a Sport" have poured in from every corner, and the book's opening pages feature some provocative testimonials. "Sharkie Zartman has written an empowering book about aging based on an athlete's experience, knowledge and insight," says Helen Dennis, co-author of Los Angeles Times bestseller "Project Renewment: The First Retirement Model for Career Women." "She combines sound information, humor, understanding and personal insights that make the book a pleasure to read. I would recommend this as a 'must read' for anyone who wants to age successfully."
In addition to her instructional work at El Camino Community College, Sharkie Zartman is also available for interviews and speaking engagements. Her topics of expertise include holistic training principles for empowered aging, exercise as the real fountain of youth, the optimal game plan for successful aging, the athletic mindset, and why nutrition after 50 is more important than ever.
