Employment in Higher Education Remains Stable; Ads for Full-time Faculty Outpace Part-time for First Time in Three Years
STATE COLLEGE, Pa., Feb. 24, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- The number of jobs in higher education was essentially unchanged in Q4 2014 marking almost two years that employment in higher education has been stable, according to the latest report from HigherEdJobs.
An analysis of U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data by HigherEdJobs found the total number of jobs in higher education incrementally declined by about 100 jobs, or just 0.01 percent, in Q4 2014 compared to the same period in the prior year. Four-year colleges and universities gained 2,300 jobs, or 0.1 percent, while community colleges lost 2,400 jobs, or 3.3 percent of their workforce. On an annual basis, higher education jobs increased about 3,100 jobs, 0.2 percent in 2014, which was the same slight increase in 2013 when they grew by 3,400.
The latest report from HigherEdJobs also examines advertisements for job postings in academia. It found that the number of advertisements for job postings in academia continued to increase in Q4 2014, and at an accelerated pace. And, for the first time in three years, postings for full-time faculty grew at a faster rate than postings for part-time faculty. "It's too early to call this a trend, but this is good news for adjuncts and recent Ph.D. recipients who are looking to move into full-time faculty positions," said John Ikenberry, president of HigherEdJobs.
The relatively steady annual growth rate for higher education job postings compared to the lower rate of growth for higher education employment could indicate that colleges and universities are experiencing higher overall employee turnover for a variety of reasons.
The report analyzes the most current data from BLS and HigherEdJobs' posting trends from colleges and universities that have continuously subscribed to the company's unlimited posting plan for four years, a group of more than 900 schools that have no financial deterrent not to post any openings.
