BROOKFIELD, Wis., May 4, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Nurses lend emotional support to patients and families on a daily basis. But focusing on empathy for others can lead nurses to struggle with their own emotions.
In honor of National Nurses Week 2017, Nurse.com by OnCourse Learning will offer a free webinar, "Empathy 101: How to Care for Yourself While Emotionally Supporting Others," at 1 p.m. ET May 10. The webinar features nationally recognized nurse, author and speaker, Kati Kleber, BSN, RN, CCRN.
The webinar, worth 1.0 contact hour, is among a number of free resources available during National Nurses Week from Nurse.com by OnCourse Learning.
"Research shows that nurses who effectively empathize with their patients have higher rates of compassion fatigue," Kleber said. "I've experienced this myself and found some great tips and resources to help bedside nurses be more effective at empathy, but also practice protective measures for compassion fatigue."
Kleber is a national certified critical care nurse who lives in Illinois. She is the author of the books "Admit One" and "What's Next?" published by the American Nurses Association. She also self-published her first book, "Becoming Nursey," and is a blogger and podcaster on top nursing trends and topics.
"Kati is insightful and provides great information for all nurses," said Jennifer Mensik, PhD, RN, NEA-BC, FAAN, OnCourse Learning's vice president of CE programming. "Her passion for nursing is palpable."
Along with the free live webinar, other offerings for nurses include a second free CE opportunity and exclusive content in the National Nurses Week 2017 digital resource guide.
The resource guide, which is available via mobile, desktop and tablet devices, includes the following content:
- The CE course "Evidence-based practice in a clinical setting" is offered free to nurses, courtesy of Capella University. The course, which is free through July 3, introduces critical-care nurses to EBP and examines the differences among evidence-based practice, research and quality improvement.
- The cover story "Nurse heroes come in many forms" highlights how nurses display heroism in a number of settings.
- The feature story "Nursing schools know how to celebrate" details how National Nurses Week celebrations at colleges and universities are as varied as nursing roles.
- The "Happy Birthday, Nightingale" feature shares key dates throughout the life of Florence Nightingale.
- A special section includes thoughts from OnCourse Learning's nurses about defining moments and experiences in their careers.
