LOS ANGELES, Dec. 3, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Emma Johnson, award-winning journalist and senior personal finance reporter for RetailMeNot, has been named a finalist in GOBankingRates' fourth annual "Best Personal Finance Expert" competition. Johnson will be competing against 11 other experts chosen by GOBankingRates staff in collaboration with writers and editors at the top media outlets in the personal finance space.

Johnson, who was one of Daily Finance's 20 Personal Finance Influencers to Follow on Twitter in 2014, is a regular contributor to RetailMeNot's The Real Deal blog and runs WealthySingleMommy.com. As part of the contest, all personal finance experts were asked "What is the number one thing Americans can do to set themselves up for financial success in 2015?" Johnson's response was to boost your take-home pay.

"Give yourself a raise in 2015," she said. "This might mean mustering up the nerve to ask your boss for a pay increase, starting a side business, or increasing your billing if you already have your own company. Then make sure you're saving at least 5 percent of your total income!"
